Modern Foreign Languages Department

Modern Foreign Languages

MFL department

We are a department of 9 specialist language teachers, currently supported by 3 full-time Foreign Language Assistants, with whom many pupils have regular contact in order to enhance their spoken language. Our department also includes 2 Advanced Skills teachers.

The award of Language College status in 2006 enabled us to diversify the curriculum, offer a wider range of extra-curricular activities and work with partner secondary and primary schools, local business, industry, and the wider community. We offer Mandarin Chinese as a lunchtime activity, GCSE Latin via video conferencing for selected pupils in year 9 and also Urdu classes as twilight sessions for pupils from GCSE to A level.

All KS3 pupils learn two languages (French with either German or Spanish) and we offer a wide range of extra curricular activities and trips.   At the end of year 9, pupils choose which language(s) they would like to continue and embark upon the AQA GCSE course. So all pupils study at least one language to GCSE and there are a good number of dual linguists. In the sixth form we currently offer AQA Advanced level courses in French, German, Spanish and Urdu.

The department consists of 7 classrooms and a Sanako multimedia language laboratory and also benefits from a departmental office and language resource area. All rooms have access to the school’s computer network and are equipped with interactive whiteboards.

We hope you enjoy your visit to our web pages.  You will find information regarding the courses on offer, extra-curricular activities and trips, resources for both students & teachers and other general information about the department, the school and Modern Languages in general!
