Consistently outstanding GCSE and A-level results confirm Heckmondwike Grammar School as one of the top performing state schools in the country.

The school was recently included in the published Ofsted “honours list” of schools and colleges who have achieved four outstanding inspection reports. Heckmondwike Grammar is the only secondary school from throughout the Yorkshire and Humberside region to receive this accolade.

Not surprisingly, there is a high demand for sixth form places amongst local students who value the outstanding teaching and pastoral support and the wide range of AS and A-level courses on offer. Heckmondwike Grammar has the largest school sixth form in Kirklees and this, combined with its specialisation in AS and A-level, means that students can select from 32 different A-level courses. The broad subject choice enables all students to select a combination of A-levels which will meet their interests, aptitudes and career paths. All subjects are taught by experienced specialists who are expert in providing the continuity from GCSE to A-level which is so essential for success. For students who enjoy academic challenge there is also the option of broadening their studies by taking university level courses or the AQA Baccalaureate qualification.

Alongside the inspirational teaching is the excellent pastoral guidance and support, designed to meet the needs of each individual student, together with a wide range of extra curricular opportunities to enable students to pursue their musical, sporting and intellectual interests. This is complemented by comprehensive careers guidance, which meets the exacting standards of the careers quality award.

The school’s specialist status means that facilities for teaching and learning are second to none. The school’s self contained sixth form centre, with its social and adjoining study areas, have recently been complemented by a new sixth form block which will provide state of the art science laboratories and additional sixth form classrooms.

Becoming a Sixth Form student in a school is very special. You are the senior pupils in the school and as such receive privileges of dress, access to facilities and freedom of movement. Most importantly there is continuity of learning by specialist teachers who know you well and are therefore well placed to ease the transition from GCSE to Advanced Level Study. Their prime concern is your personal welfare and the successful completion of your studies. Hard work will be essential but you will receive excellent tuition and pastoral support.

Heckmondwike Grammar School has a long tradition of preparing students for University and our Sixth Form courses are therefore primarily academic with most students following 5 AS level subjects.

Complementing your academic studies will be a wealth of activities which will enable you to grow in maturity and social responsibility. They will help to develop initiative, independence, leadership and organisational skills, all of which will be extremely useful when applying to university or for employment.

As a member of the Sixth Form you will be valued and encouraged to thrive within a caring, supportive community. You will have excellent opportunities for academic, social and personal development and I am sure you will have an enjoyable and successful Sixth Form career at Heckmondwike.
