National Relay Championships for Secondary Schools 2004

On Friday, November 12, 2004 the school had teams competing in the regional rounds of the ‘English Schools Swimming Association’ national relay championships for secondary schools. The event, held at Shipley Pool, attracted schools from all over Yorkshire, Humberside and Lincolnshire.

In the Intermediate Championships (Years 10 and 11) both the Boys and the Girls teams finished in the top 6 but just outside the medals, a very creditable performance against strong opposition.

In the Junior Championships (Years 7 to 9) the girls' teams excelled, emerging as Champions of Yorkshire, Humberside and Lincolnshire in both the Freestyle and Medley relays.

Junior Girls
Kate Hutchinson
Suzanne Ward
Fern Gardner
Emma Nutting

Medley relay
1. Heckmondwike GS                  Champions 2004
2. The Mount School, York
3. Wakefield Girls’ High

Freestyle relay
1. Heckmondwike GS                 Champions 2004
2. Wakefield Girls’ High
3. The Mount School, York

Their performance in the Medley relay saw them qualify for the National Finals of the Championships, to which the top 12 schools in the country are invited. These take place in Middlesbrough in February 2005. We wish them well in this prestigious event.

Congratulations to all on an excellent set of results against very strong opposition in the largest of the ESSA divisions!

The next event for teams in Years 7 to 11 will be the Leeds and District Schools Championships in January, where we will be defending the title we have held for the last three years. Details will be out shortly.

Mr. Allen
