Language College matters
The school was proud to be awarded the status of specialist Language College in April 2006, complementing the long-standing specialism in Technology. The new identity of the school is evident throughout the premises: the main entrance foyer is decorated with the flags of France, Germany, Spain and the European Union; the language rooms around the main Hall are festooned with appropriate bunting; classrooms in subject areas all around the school are labelled in the target languages of French, German and Spanish.

 

 The impact of the Language College status has been felt throughout the school and the local community. Here is a summary of the key initiatives:

 

·        Attendance at 6^th form conferences

·        Easter revision classes for Years 11, 12 and 13

·        Russian classes

·        Spanish fully embedded in the curriculum at all key stages

·        GCSE Latin classes

 

 

·        French assistant supporting teachers at Spen Valley High School

·        Spanish assistant supporting teachers at St. John Fisher High School

·        German assistant supporting teachers at Mirfield Free Grammar school and North Halifax Grammar

·        Membership of the Directory of Links to Languages

 

·        HGS staff supporting local primary schools in delivery of language lessons

·        HGS hosts a Celebration of Primary Languages in Kirklees every summer

·        Provision of French magazines and comics to primary schools
