The Kirklees Healthy School Standard Gold
The school is currently on the Kirklees Healthy School Programme. The programme promotes the health and emotional well-being of young people by creating an environment in schools that recognises the importance of healthy lifestyle choices. The Kirklees programme expands on the National Healthy School Programme that was launched in October 1999 with the aim to:
- Support children and young people develop healthy behaviour
- Help raise pupil achievement
- Promote social inclusion
What this means for HGS
In order for HGS to become a ‘Healthy School’ we are assessed under a number of criteria that can be grouped under nine headings. The first four must be achieved to gain the National Standard and all nine for the Kirklees Gold Standard.
There is much evidence to support that a poor diet and lack of physical exercise can lead to childhood obesity, poor behaviour, and underachievement for some pupils. The school is committed to consolidating the strong ethos it has already established towards healthy living and to continue raising awareness of the benefits to good lifestyle choices.
Significant improvements so far
The school offers a large number of sporting activities at lunchtimes and after school, and promotes involvement through school and house events.
We are proud of the continued improvement to the variety of healthy foods being offered in the dinning hall and as from September 2006 all vending machines were removed from the school.
The school continues to be a smoke free site.
A biannual Health Fair to promote all aspects of a healthy lifestyle
We would be very interested in receiving comments by parents/carers regarding The Healthy Schools Programme. We consider the programme to be beneficial to the health and well-being of our pupils and we hope you will support our involvement. Any comments or queries you may have, please contact Miss B. Lewis at school via email at b.lewis@heckgrammar.co.uk
