Year 7 visit the Vajapani Buddhist centre in Huddersfield as part of their study into the Alien Quest scheme of work. The students have the opportunity to meet some Buddhist nuns and ask any questions they may have. This could be from \'why do you shave your hair?\' to \'Why do you chant as part of your worship time?\'
The nuns always make us really welcome, and are very open to discussion and questions. We spend part of our time in the main shrine room which houses many different images of the different Buddhas. Students are asked to compare two of them, and create questions about them.
The nuns also explain the reason for wearing their robes and the symbolism behind them. Students have the opportunity to partake in a meditation exercise - but this is completely voluntary, and students can opt out if they so wish.
Buddhism is about controlling the body and the mind, and is quite different from many of the main world religions. Students are required to compare and contrast their experience with that of the Gurdwara.
