Moving from KS2 to KS3 – The Timetable

• Summer term when child is in year 5  - two open evenings in June or July - see school website for further details

          Opportunities for prospective pupils and parents to visit the school, hear the Head Teacher explain admission procedures and see departmental presentations.

• late September / early October - entrance examination
  It is essential that pupils seeking admission to the school be registered in advance to sit the entrance examination. Pupils sit tests in Mathematics and Reasoning, which are conducted on a Saturday. Further details of the length and content of the tests are issued in the summer term preceding the test date. Results are notified before the deadline for submitting the common application form to the LA (see below). Parents should note that this does not constitute the offer of a place since more children may meet the standard than there are places available.

• October - Common Application Form
  Final date for submission of the CAF to the LA (Kirklees only – parents who reside outside the authority need to check their own LA’s submission date)  Parents are reminded that it is essential that both the LA and School application forms are completed (see above).

• March - formal offer of places by LA
  With the offer of places parents will be notified of the closing date for acceptance of those places. After that, there will be separate deadlines for the notification of admission appeal and for addition of a child’s name to the waiting list. Waiting list places will ultimately be offered via the LA.

• May - admissions brochure
  Parents of pupils, who have been allocated a place in the school, are provided with the information required to prepare for entry into the school, including a uniform list, a pupil questionnaire, dates for the Induction Day and the start of term etc.

• June - parents' meetings
  Two evenings, at which parents and pupils can hear the Head Teacher outline induction procedures. There will also be an opportunity to see a display by our uniform suppliers, to meet a representative from the local public transport operator and to talk informally to senior staff over refreshments.

• July - introduction day
  An opportunity to sample a day in the life of H.G.S. A year group assembly will be followed by a form period and a series of sample lessons – a chance to meet your form tutor and your new classmates; an opportunity to get familiar with premises in general, and your tutor base in particular. With several year groups out of school, having already completed their external examinations, this should prove to be a gentle introduction to daily life!

• September (school year of entry) - first day
  A delayed return by other pupils will afford you the space and time to help you to settle in. Much of the day will be spent in a form period with your tutor, helping you to make the adjustment to new routines and expectations.

• September - informal parents'  information evening
  A chance for parents to meet with form tutors to share initial perceptions of the transition period and to gather final details for the Weardale residential visits.

• October - Weardale House Outdoor Pursuits Centre
  A three-day residential visit to County Durham for all new Year 7 pupils. Living together and participating together in the range outdoor pursuits will help to develop relationships, building a form / year group identity.

• October - personal interviews
  Around the end of the first half-term, all new pupils meet individually with a member of the Senior Leadership Team to review the transitional period.

• Year 7 - PSHE programme
  Throughout Year 7 the Personal, Social and Health Education programme supports the transition with elements on changes, new experiences, study skills, personal organisation, bullying.
