Year 6 Science

Science Transition Project

In response to national evidence, that suggests a dip in academic attainment between the end of primary school and the start of secondary school, HGS have piloted a transition project to familiarise pupils with science at secondary school. Pupils at Norristhorpe J & I school, and Millbridge J, I & N have been taking part in a three week project to plan and carry out a scientific investigation surrounding the topic of energy.

The aims of this project were to:
  • Develop continuity in the science curriculum between primary and second school
  • Engage pupils in science investigations, and allow pupils to accumulate practical skills that can be directly transferred into year 7
  • Help prepare pupils socially and emotionally for moving school

Session 1- Learning about forms of energy
Pupils ranked different foods by the amount of energy they contained, and then discussed the forms of energy that make a range of objects work.

Session 2- Setting up the fruit clock
To review forms of energy pupils observed the energy released from food when it is set alight. Pupils then tested their knowledge of an electrical circuit, and learnt how fruit could be use to power a clock in place of a battery. At the end of the session, pupils set up their own fruit clock in teams.

Session 3- Scientific Write-up
Pupils wrote up their scientific ‘fruit clock’ investigation, with the help of HGS pupils
Andrew Rouse, Robert Woodyet, Lucy Hepworth, Molly Carmichael and Corey Robinson, and asked the year 8 students lots of probing questions about secondary school.

The Summer Project

This project is primarily for year 6 pupils joining HGS in September 2008 but anyone can have a go! You can practise your scientific investigation skills by carrying out a practical at home and write it up using the worksheet below. Print out your completed worksheet and bring it to you very first science lesson.

Introduction to the project

The aim of the project is for you to make a wind-up toy car using the basic instructions below as a guide (it may not be exactly like those cars opposite!). Then use your car to investigate whether the number of turns of the front wheels effects the distance that the car travels. You will need to decide the number of turns that you will test, and will need to repeat the test three times. You can also decide the exact design of the car using materials you can find in the home.

Use the resources below to help you plan your investigation
