Junior House Debates

Junior House Debating Competition (2010/2011)

The Junior House Debate took place on Wednesday 6th July. The competition took the form of a balloon debate. Houses were represented as follows:

Priestley                      Sir Alexander Fleming
Speakers:                     Charlie Whittington and Andrew Styles

Houldsworth                Harry Potter
Speakers:                     Redha Rubaie, Warren Froggatt, Alix Mallett

Clarke                         Sir Lancelot
Speakers:                     Lewis Roberts, Niamh McAndrew, Amy Fagelman

Brontë                         Noah
Speakers:                     Alexis Helliwell, Ellie Walker, Bronte McKeown

After an excellent debate, Sir Alexander Fleming was voted the person who should stay in the balloon.

The quality of the debate was excellent, the best Mr Falshaw has witnessed in six years of running the event. The content of the speeches, the quality of speaking, speeches in the Open Debate, and the speakers' responses to contributions from the floor were all impressive. Priestley and Clarke suffered 10 point time penalties for not speaking long enough, which in Priestley's case had a significant impact on the result!

The adjudication was as follows:

Position House Points scored Lees Cup points
1 Brontë 69 4
2 Priestley 63 3
3 Houldsworth 62 2
4 Clarke 47 1

The ‘Hubert S. Houldsworth’ shield for 2010/2011 goes to Brontë House

The trophy for best speaker goes to Andrew Styles (Priestley House)
