Promoting Healty Catering

Catering within the education sector, we have responsibility to play a role within health promotion by: 

 

  • Providing and advertising healthy food options on our menu
  • Working with the following partners – teachers, parents, school governors and health professionals to help our students make informed decisions regarding their diet

 

Heckmondwike Grammar School was awarded National Healthy School Status in 2007. Since then the school has strived to offer students and staff healthy choice options. This includes the following criteria:

  

  • Personal, social and health education
  • Healthy eating
  • Physical activity and education
  • Student emotional health and well-being

 

All this work is on an ongoing basis which reflects Heckmondwike Grammar School’s commitment towards their students well being.

The Government’s Food Based Standards for School Lunches were introduced in September 2006. England now has highly regulated Secondary School Lunch Standards a position Heckmondwike Grammar School fully supports. Our students have access to high quality nutritious lunches which enables our students to embrace a healthy diet, this helps to support students attain high educational standards. 

 

Healthy Choices includes adhering to the following criteria:

 

  • More Fruit and Vegetables - At least one portion of fruit and vegetables/salad
  • More Oily Fish - Oily fish such as sardines or mackerel should be served once every three weeks
  • Bread - Bread or bread choices should be available at lunch every day
  • Drinking Water - Free Drinking Water should be available at all times
  • Healthier Drinks - Drinks should be only Water, Milk or Juice based drinks. The drinks should have less than 5% added sugar, Juice based drinks should have a minimum of 50% juice

 

The following foods have restriction or are no longer permitted:
 
  • Confectionary - Confectionary such as sweets and chocolate are no longer allowed
  • Savoury Snacks - Savoury Snacks such as crisps are not available for sale
  • Salt and Condiments - Salt is no longer available at lunch and Condiments are only available in sachets
  • Deep Fried Foods – Deep Fried Foods are restricted to twice weekly
  • Processed Meat Products – Restrictions are put on Processed Meat Products such as burgers, sausages & pies which can be sold only occasionally. They must meet minimum meat content

 

All lunches at Heckmondwike Grammar School are nutritionally analysed and meet with Government regulations.
