Homework

Homework is set regularly and you complete it outside lesson time so you can consolidate what you learn in the classroom.

Rationale

Not all homework is done at home. If you find it hard to work at home, or if you need resources (books, software, equipment) more readily available at school, you might want to do your homework at school.

Homework enhances learning, improves achievement and develops your study skills. It is an integral part of the curriculum. At KS3, you will not follow a prescribed homework timetable. This is to encourage your teachers to set homework when appropriate and of a length necessary to achieve high outcomes for a given topic or project. This is also to encourage you to aim for a high level of independent learning.

Aims

Homework enables you to:

  • Take ownership and responsibility for your learning
  • Learn independently
  • Consolidate and extend work covered in class or prepare for new learning activities
  • Access resources not available in the classroom
  • Develop research skills
  • Show progress and understanding
  • Enhance your study skills e.g. planning, time management and self-discipline
  • Engage cooperation and support from your parents.

Responsibilities

The role of your teacher:

  1. To set homework.
  2. To provide the stimulus.
  3. To give full and comprehensive instructions, ensuring these are noted on ClassCharts.
  4. To set deadlines for completed work and ensure that they are met.
  5. To set, mark and return all homework promptly, as appropriate.
  6. To provide help and support.
  7. To give praise wherever possible, including the use of positives in ClassCharts.
  8. If necessary, to give sanctions in line with school policy, including the use of negatives in ClassCharts.

Your role:

  1. To listen to homework instructions in class.
  2. To ensure that homework is completed and handed in to meet the deadline.
  3. To attempt all work to the best of your ability.
  4. To inform your teacher of any difficulties.

The role of your form tutor:

  1. To include homework in student mentoring where appropriate.
  2. To see that homework is being set.
  3. To liaise with the class teacher and head of year as necessary if problems come to light.
