Programmes of Study
Your programme of study is made up of the courses you choose to pursue during your two years at HGS Sixth Form.
How do I choose my programme of study?
We believe that you should have the opportunity to choose subjects that match your strengths, interests, and future plans. Most students take three A levels, which is in line with university expectations. However, if you have high GCSE grades, you may be able to study four A levels, and if you want to take Further Maths, you’ll need to choose four. All of our A levels are assessed by exams at the end of Year 13.
You can also take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which lets you dive into an independent research project on a topic you care about. Doing the EPQ is great preparation for university, helping you build research, critical thinking, and writing skills.
When will I study my chosen subjects?
Our timetable works on a two-week cycle. Most A level subjects are taught across 10 hours of lessons per cycle, plus two hours of skills lessons. You’ll also have non-contact periods for independent study, so you can use our workrooms, study in the library, or relax with friends in the Jo Cox Centre. If you show a strong work ethic and a positive attitude, you can even earn the chance to leave the site during your non-contact periods through our earned autonomy programme.
In addition to your main subjects, everyone in the Sixth Form takes part in personal development sessions like PSHE, and a skills programme to help you become a confident, independent learner. Our Pathways give you even more choice, so you can shape your Sixth Form journey to fit your goals—whether that’s university, an apprenticeship, or jumping straight into work.
