On Friday 11 June, a design team consisting of Alice Cheesbrough, Naomi Fisayo, Hannah Rouse and Emily Sharp (with Mr Stevens and Mrs Power tagging along) attended a Celebration Event at the Design Museum in London after being shortlisted for the Design Ventura Award. After being given time to explore the inspirational exhibitions, we made our way to the Huth Gallery for the formal awards ceremony. The seven shortlisted teams were all presented with an award and certificate, ending with the Sow Beautiful team from Heckmondwike Grammar School being announced as overall winners!
Once they had stopped shaking from the excitement of their well-deserved success, Alice, Naomi, Hannah and Emily were smiling from ear to ear and almost bursting with pride. It was a wonderful and emotional event to be a part of. Since winning the competition, Alice, Naomi, Hannah and Emily have been pushed out of their comfort zones several times, taking part in a live interview on BBC Radio Leeds and a recorded interview which will form part of a segment to be show on Leeds TV (Freeview 7 / Sky 117 / VM 159) on Wednesday 23 June from 6pm. It has to be said, that they have all taken to their new media duties like proverbial ducks to water.
The journey doesn’t end here. The team will now work with a professional product design company to develop the seed launcher to ensure it is suitable for commercial manufacture. The product will then be professionally produced before being sold in the Design Museum shop (we’ve already had a pre-order for 50 of them!). All profits will be donated to Kirkwood Hospice- chosen by the team members themselves because of their close connections with the charity.
Alice, Naomi, Hammah and Emily are incredibly talented innovators and we hope that this triumph is the first of many achievements for them in the world of design. We are incredibly proud of what these young ladies have already achieved and very much look forward to seeing how this project develops in the coming months and years.
Bring the buzz back to Britain!

Celebrating the memory of former Head Girl, Jo Cox, staff of Heckmondwike Grammar School took part in the 4th Annual RunForJo event on Sunday 20 June 2021. Whilst last year’s event had to be postponed many events in 2021 were held remotely. However, we decided that we were in a position to organise a small, socially distanced event. 30 staff, students and friends met on Sunday morning and set off on the fun run from school and headed out along the Greenway with a much needed water stop at the turnaround point near Primrose Lane. First home was Deputy Director of the 6th Form; Mr Sam Ellis, setting a blistering pace and covering the 6km course, and ringing the finish bell on the line in a time 27 minutes and 38 seconds, with the rest of the participants arriving back within 50 minutes. Organiser and Deputy Headteacher Mr Richard Tipler said “It was a fantastic event, and a fitting tribute for our much loved and dearly missed former student, Jo. Staff at HGS always rise to a challenge and it was great to have everyone come together, albeit briefly for the photo, to run in a socially distanced event. I am sure Jo would have approved. An amazing effort from everyone involved.
See below the House calendar for this half term. More information about how to sign up for events will follow from House Leaders.
As usual, HGS will be taking part in a non-uniform day (optional super hero theme) in an attempt to raise as much money as possible for this fantastic cause.
Donations can be made in school or via ParentPay.
Thank you to everyone for supporting this great cause.

These individual successes represent the tip of the iceberg of what is shaping up to be a notable year for year 13 progression. At time of writing in March 2021, our 205 university applicants have between them amassed almost 600 offers to study at universities from St Andrews to Imperial College, from Leeds to Duke University, North Carolina, where they will read a veritable alphabet of subjects from accounting to zoology. Of particular note are the 13 students currently holding offers to read medicine, dentistry, or veterinary medicine, with many more still waiting to hear from universities. Other students have opted for a different but equally exciting progression pathway, with apprenticeship applicants receiving contract offers from leading firms such as RSM and PWC.
We are launching a week of virtual activities across school to celebrate National Careers Week 2021 from 1st to 5th March. Below is an overview of what we will be offering:
