Home Language Exams

Summer 2024 Home Language Examinations. This service is only available to HGS students currently on roll.

Examination deadline dates, entry fees & timetables will be published here when available.

Below are the Home Language Terms & Conditions of Entry for Summer 2024

Heckmondwike Grammar School (HGS) can act as a centre for home language examinations for current HGS students.

HGS will administer all writing, listening and reading aspects of the home language examination. However, the oral examination must be conducted by an “external suitable person” who must be sourced and paid for by the representatives of the candidate and will not be provided by HGS.

The “external suitable person” will be required to provide the following information:

  • Full Name
  • Contact Telephone Number
  • Position (i.e. Tutor)
  • Conflict of Interest Declaration

The “external suitable person” who will conduct the oral exam would be a teacher or tutor of the language. The “external suitable person” engaged to conduct the oral test must not be a family member of the candidate and there must be no other conflict of interest. If the “external suitable person” is acquainted with the candidate, then you must inform the centre of the conflict of interest. The “external suitable person” conducting the speaking assessment must be fully familiar with the exam specification, the requirements and conduct of the speaking assessment and the Joint Council for Qualifications, (JCQ), Instructions for Conducting Examinations, in advance of the exam. HGS is unable to provide any further support with regards to the oral examination.

HGS will not be involved in the sourcing of the “external suitable person” and will only provide administration, invigilation and a location at HGS for the oral component of the examination. The oral component of the exam will only be scheduled at a suitable time after the school day finishes.

In addition to the awarding body exam entry fees, the centre charges a non-refundable administration fee of £50.00 for providing this service. An additional charge of £50.00 will also be charged to cover the accommodation and invigilation of the oral component of the exam.

You are responsible for ensuring the exams office receives all your entry/entries information on time.

Should your exam entry/entries and use of the centre’s exam accommodation incur additional or other fees, including extra invigilation costs, these will be charged at a later date once the examination timetable is finalised; these additional fees, where incurred, must be paid at least one week before the examination is due to take place.

The centre reserves the right to withdraw your entry/entries if any amount remains outstanding.

The centre cannot accept responsibility for any amendment fees that become due if you fail to give sufficient notice to make any necessary changes to your entry information.

In the unlikely event of exam cancellation, Heckmondwike Grammar School will be unable to provide a centre/teacher assessed grade and you will only be entitled to any refund amount that is issued by the awarding body concerned.

Should you decide to withdraw your entry/entries then you will only be entitled to any refund amount that is issued by the awarding body concerned. Refunds will only be made by awarding bodies for a limited time after the entry deadline has passed and this varies dependent on the awarding body.

Failure to follow the HGS exam rules and regulations will result in withdrawal of permission to use the exam accommodation and effective withdrawal from the exam series without recourse to any refund.
