WORLD BOOK DAY – 7 March 2024

World Book Day is back!

Last year, for World Book Day, we spent the week celebrating all things literacy in true HGS style!

We hosted a wide range of events throughout the week such as: the coveted competition for bookmark designing; a literacy themed treasure hunt; Jackanory fire-side reads from staff and
students; and, of course, a whole-school fancy dress with over £920 of donations in support of the ‘Give A Book’ charity (https://giveabook.org.uk/ ) – which is dedicated to promoting books and the pleasure of reading, particularly with disadvantaged children and in places such as prisons and schools.

THIS YEAR, WORLD BOOK DAY IS BACK – AND IT’S BIGGER THAN EVER!

HGS are holding a wide range of literary inspired events to celebrate World Book Day.  Here are the scheduled events for w.c. 4th March:

• A jumble swap of unused World Book Day costumes from previous years,
• The annual bookmark competition,
• A talk and workshops by a published author,
• Break time ‘Fireside Reads’,
• Fancy dress costume competition and catwalk (get thinking about your costumes now!),
• ‘The Case of the Stolen Book’ Treasure Hunt.

HERE’S WHERE WE NEED YOUR HELP!

The Jumble Swap

Do you have a costume from World Book Days of years gone by that you aren’t going to use? Are you struggling to decide what costume to wear, and in need of some inspiration?
Bring your old costumes to S014 during lunch-times of w.c. 26th February so that it may be used by other students – or come along to borrow one for yourself!

Break-time Fireside Reads

You might remember the success of last year’s fireside reads, but this year it’s getting even brighter. During breaktimes on Monday-Wednesday staff and students are invited to read a section of their favourite book to others in the Swann Hall, lit by a roaring (computer generated) fire!

If you would like to take part in reading a section of your favourite book, put your name forward to Miss Wilkinson by Friday 23rd February!
